However, finding out they didn't try to cast someone else as Jason Bourne but rather created an entirely new character allowed me to calm down a little. Every post that we make regarding books will be titled with "Books, check 'em out," or other variations of it. There are actually a couple of them lost in our archive, but I managed to find one of them. When Borders closed I bought a handful that'll take me a couple of years to finish. I just finished the third book from that pile so on to the next--the one I'm reading now is Naked by David Sedaris. Anyway, this is a pretty awesome stop-motion video of a bookstore in Canada. I'm sure it took a lot of time rearranging the books so it's worth your time. Check it out.

Overpriced Modern Day Hippy Fest Announces Line Up

Never been to Coachella before, because I hate that bright bastard in the sky (my fare skin reminds me all the time) and I don't like my entire body feeling like a construction worker's sweaty balls. However, every year when Coachella announces their annual line up, I like to play the "who would I actually wanna see" game.

Surprisingly, this is the first year that I would actually care to see each of the three main acts.

Friday: MADNESS!!, Tim Armstrong (of Rancid fame), Mazzy Star, Explosions in the Sky (again), M83, Datsik
Saturday: BUZZCOCKS!!, Godspeed You! Black Emperor (again), the Shins
Sunday: Fitz and the Tantrums (again), Co Flow (can never pass up El-P), At The Drive In, Beirut

Wait, let me think about this again; I've already seen Explosions, Godspeed and Fitz, seen El-P many times, same goes for Tim Armstrong. So, I'd really only go to see Madness, Buzzcocks, Beirut, Drive In, and Radiohead to be honest with you. Can't justify spending $600+ to do that though.

New Year for New Things

Even though I've griped many times about how the arrival of a new year is over-celebrated, this one seems to hold a much different view for me. I'm not sure what it is exactly, perhaps my mind has been too preoccupied with things that needed to be done that made it impossible to feel the sense of renewal--whatever it is, I can actually feel the presence of this new year/new beginning. I finally have my B.Sc. so having a career is much more probable now (at least, I hope so), in addition, I turned 25 with the new year so I guess you can see why this year holds a different meaning for me. You're probably already thinking that the remainder of this post will be as super sentimental as what you've already read, but the main purpose of this blog is to share the coolest things I've received as gifts BECAUSE of my graduation/birthday! Right now, I'm writing this entry with my awesome Macbook Pro--thanks to my family. From my co-blogger/beloved bf/bestie, Jesse, I got my first taxidermy piece and Ashley Wood/Frankenstein toys--I haven't got any pictures, but they will surely have their own post so stay tuned.

So this is post-worthy (for myself at least). Since I really don't post too often nowadays, I thought I'd share some news that you may not particularly care about. My nephew Eli, was born a couple of days ago and the day after, my parents celebrated their 40th Anniversary (not quite Golden, but a milestone nonetheless). Happy Birthday Eli, your sisters have been a fun handful, and Happy 40th Anniversary to my adorable parents--nothing can top having a grandson as an anniversary present, I guess.

Willard Asylum Suitcases

Photographer, Jon Crispin, took on this project to present these time capsules. The video is pretty emotional--it gives you a glimpse of the different personalities as well as a sort of connection with those who've resided at Willard. The Asylum was for individuals who had chronic mental illnesses so majority of the patients never really left. The facility was closed almost two decades ago and these suitcases were the only items left to take part in an exhibition since then. Read more about it here.

Stacked Burger Joint

Semi-new burger spot opened recently at Fashion Valley mall in San Diego called Stacked. You order (and pay) on an Ipad at your table. They have their menu as a touch screen App. Original concept, sorta, that makes it impossible for your super specific order to be messed up. Not too pricey at all. Burgers were really good actually, fries tasted like paper, not waiting 30 minutes to pay your bill was the best part.

No picture of the food, I was hungry. But close your eyes and imagine a burger, there.

We finally checked out this restaurant in Orange. We had a prolonged convo about how it SHOULD be pronounced, but forgot to ask one of the employees to validate which of the following is correct: Bruhk-see, Brook-see, or Bruh-see (since the French spell Brussels "Bruxelles" and Bruxie is actually derived from that). We've heard literally these three pronunciations, but if you really want to be technical, then the latter should be the correct one. Anyway, we do plan on going back to check out the rest of the menu since it isn't very extensive.

Ever since I saw Major Lazer's music video for their smash hit Pon De Floor, they've been a guilty pleasure of mine. And by guilty pleasure I mean the music isn't anything spectacular, it's bad dance music that 19 year olds obsess over. Regardless, these dudes are pretty cool.

They're new single "Original Don" (which actually sounds like 7 single snippets rolled into one) is all over the place, msahing genres and BPMs. I'm anxiously awaiting the music video for this.

Along with Jesse's new Oliberté boots, he was kind enough to get me this vintage leather suitcase. I was contemplating on buying it, but decided not to at that time, but Jesse, being the observant little bugger he is, noticed that I must've picked it up and put it down twenty some times while we were at the shop. It's a neat briefcase--can fit a laptop, and it's pretty classy to say the least. The guy who was working at the time, I believe his name was Mark(?), had mentioned that the owners check out thrift/vintage stores along with swap meets/flea markets almost everyday to find leather goods and refurbish 'em. Pretty cool in my opinion.

World War Z

So 4 years ago Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B, outbid Leonardo DiCaprio's production company, Appian Way, for the screen rights to a book called World War Z. Yeah, Pitt and DiCaprio were fighting to OWN this movie. Oh, and the "Z", it stands for ZOMBIE.

Yup, I have a boner the size of Rhode Island and Sarah's panties are as wet as Lake Superior right now. The reported budget for World War Z is a whopping $125 MILLION. To give you a sense of comparison, the previous highest budgeted "Zombie movie" was Dawn of the Dead at only $28 million.

We have awhile to wait though, the film is scheduled to release December 21st . . . . 2012.

Bonus Point: Bryan Cranston (from Breaking Bad) has a role in the film as well.

So I came upon this gem while channel-surfing before work a couple of days ago. I recorded some of the episodes and made Jesse watch it--and he, too, is now a fan of this gem. Everyone shares the same curiosity when it comes to the unusual and out-of-the-ordinary, but collecting things in the mentioned category? Not so much. When Jesse and I go to New York next year, we will definitely visit Obscura. I want everything my wallet can possibly purchase. In the meantime, I'll stick with my small collection of the grotesque and macabre.

Food From Heaven

Being half mexican AND living in Southern California makes for a TON of Mexican food consumption. In a sense, I may not be The King of Yelp: Andy Cool but I am a sort of expert when it comes to Mexican dishes. So rest assured when I boldly state, "This is hands down the best mexican food dish I've ever tasted in my entire life."

After a drunken rampage of Cabo San Lucas' downtown bars and nightlife, Chris Ngo's bachelor party gang was famished. I busted our a little bit of the 'ol espanol and to our cab driver and voila we ended up at Taqueria "El Paisa". Our driver could not stop raving about how delicious this dish was going to be. So fast in fact, Du Tran admitted "I tried to pick up on what he was saying but he was talking so fast."

Imported cheese from Mexico's version of Wisconsin (Chihauhau), imported carne asada from the finest suppliers of beef in all of Mexico (Sonora), and habanero salsa so good, but spicy, that it made Johnny Vo cry.

I introduce to you, the REAL carne asada fries: Papas con Queso y Asada.

Labor Day Weekend: FYF Fest, LA

We went to Altamont's FYF hippie fest yesterday, and while the music was awesome (Weakerthans, Broken Social Scene, The Descendants and Explosions in the Sky were my favorites), the audience/concert goers on the other hand were a HUGE distraction. Hideous outfit after hideous oufit; Above the belly button unflattering shorts on girls, dick cutting "skinny" jean shorts (when I say shorts I mean last winter's pants, turned this summer's shorts via a pair of elementary school scissors) on guys, etc. Plain and simple, this generation is trying way to hard to look unappealing to the opposite sex.

The event was held at Los Angeles Historic Park. However, this "park" was 90% dirt and straw and only 10% actual grass. And, I'm sure I could have counted all the trees on one hand. Not really sure what this "park" looks like on a normal day, but I can't imagine even a dog would enjoy this historic place.

All in all, the music was just good enough to make the day enjoyable. If it wasn't for the Beard Papa's the next morning, I'd have more to gripe about.

A little late (a month of so) but I just wanted to share with you the absolute read of the year. Here is Ghostface Killah's 3rd attempt at a10 Softest Rappers List. Keep in mind that the first editon Aubrey "Drake" Graham taking the one, two and three spots on the list. Aubrey didn't feature much better in the second edition either, taking the top spot.

Ghostface has been one of the realest artists in the game, way back, since most of these listees were still in diapers. So don't even begin to justify this as "hating" and hide behind that shielded word so often used on the interwebs. He's not hating, he's critiquing; and when you earn your stripes, you're allowed to do so.

Some car blew up for whatever reason in Los Angeles earlier this week. Coincidentally, someone got it all on camera. And again coincidentally, that camera man had a lighter on his balcony ledge. And once more coincidentally, the camera man with a lighter on his balcony ledge also lived directly in front of the exploding car. Hmm, if the LAPD doesn't have a suspect yet I'd like to collect a reward for helping them solve this case.

Oh, and also a phenomenal example of badassery, the firefighter battling the flames isn't phased by the explosion one iota.

Hillcrest Sunday Lunch - The Range

We ventured to Hillcrest (Sarah's backyard: she works in the area and opts for casual sight seeing walks instead of the quite popular 'food' on her lunch breaks) for lunch on Sunday aiming to introduce me to a place she has been frequenting lately. But, after waiting a good 15 minutes for even an acknowledgment that we were in the building, let alone a greeting or a drink order, we decided to journey elsewhere. Literally a few steps down the street we ran into The Range.

The Range is the newest spot in Hillcrest, opened two weeks ago but was already crawling with patrons. They feature a great, simple selection of organic ingredient dishes. Burgers, sandwiches, salads AND breakfast all day long!

We split a Julian hard cider that was awesome; not too dry, perfect sourness and 6.99% alcohol! I got the hand breaded with potato chips chicken strips with a Belgian waffle and Sarah got a pear, roasted almonds and blue cheese salad. Both were absolutely perfect, but as always Sarah enjoyed mine better than hers, regardless of what she'll tell you.

Oceanside Trip

Oceanside is usually just an eye blink as we make our short journey to each other. But, every once in awhile we meet half way and explore the coastal city and its slow moving atmosphere. This time we met for dinner, some dessert, and a stroll on their pier (which, exactly like every other pier I've been on in California, has a Ruby's on the end of it. Ruby definitely has a corner on that market. Well played Ruby.

We grabbed burgers at Ty's Burger House, which Sarah wasn't too thrilled with but once I switched burgers with her she was more than satisfied. (Go with the Bacon Bleu Cheese burger). We also grabbed some dessert at Petite Madeline Bakery. Ok, I'll be honest, we ate dessert BEFORE the burgers since we saw the bakery first. After all, it's not a rule that dessert has to come after dinner. I live by my own rules, I'm a rebel you hear?

The King of Limbs Sessions: From The Basement

There really wasn't much reaction when the album came out. All I remember was that people were anxiously awaiting its release then when it finally did, nothing. I must've seen a couple of friends post songs shortly after the release, but I really thought there'd be a much bigger buzz. Anyway, I personally enjoy the album, but these live sessions are definitely equivalent to gold. Enjoy.

Pasadena Rose Bowl Flea Market

We've been wanting to check the Pasadena Flea Market out for awhile now. We didn't expect too much since we both knew it would be filled with massive loads of garbage and yard sale diarrhea, with very minimal items that would entice us. We also knew the owners of said enticing items would be looking to break the bank. What we didn't anticipate was the 90+ degree heat.

After paying an ass-raping $8 entrance fee, apiece, we began to scour for cool miscellaneous nick-knacks, all the while keeping our eyes peeled for vintage furniture and toys. After an hour, all we had amassed was a $1 book detailing Scottish kilt plaid patterns and their respective family name backgrounds, and a $5 frozen lemonade. Seeing $650 price tags for a pair of knock off Herman Miller chairs wasn't really helping either.

I was determined to not leave empty handed when I came across this piece; a vintage smoking ears ashtray. Not as old as it looks, but still great living room fodder, seeing as we don't smoke. Lay the cigarette in his mouth and the smoke escapes through his ear holes; classic 1950's handcrafted miscellany.

Kid Cudi - No One Believes Me

It's no secret, Cudi is one of our guilty pleasures (the guy is no joke). This new music video is for a track he did for the Fright Night movie soundtrack. Fright Night is a new vampire movie in which Colin Farrell plays a real vampire, not a sparkling homosexual vampire. Too bad Cudi couldn't hold out for a zombie movie.

Peter's Gourmade

After seeing Hieu Ngo rant and rave about this semi new spot in Tustin, the missus and I figured we'd try it out. We were not disappointed one bit. We decided to sample the entire menu; we got the ABC Burger (avocado, bacon and cheese)and the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich.

We also got an order of the Greek Fries (they were out of lamb meat that is traditional on Greek gyro sandwiches but they replaced that with grilled chicken). The feta cheese on the fries made them pop but we still needed ranch, of course.

Run For Your Lives (Zombie Obstacle Course 5k)

So, Baltimore is pretty much a hell hole. Between its city's depiction in the critically acclaimed HBO series The Wire and their eternally awful baseball team the Orioles, the city doesn't really have much to look forward to. Well, that is until now.

Run For Your Lives is a "zombie infested 5K obstacle course race" that will take place in Baltimore. After the race, Baltimore will return to shit but hopefully, as the website claims, the "virus will spread in 2012". Meaning, more cities will host these Zombie 5K's. My fingers will remain crossed until it turns up in Orange or San Diego County.

Zombie Head Bowling Balls

These would be pretty awesome to own. However, don't hold your breath, these are not for sale. These were made as promotional advertisement items for 13th Street, a German horror movie/show TV channel. Yes, Germany DOES have a horror movie channel. And yes, America is lame for not having one as well.

These balls were placed in various bowling alleys around Germany to promote their channel. The balls were topped off with fake blood and brain goop inside the finger holes for added scare factor too.

A Closer Look: New York City c1940's

Thanks to Charles Cushman, a photographer with a very expensive camera in the 1940's, we have these images of what New York City looked like during the 1940's . . . in color. Rarely do we get to these sorts of images in color and when we do it's almost never "every day life". These pictures really do say a thousand words.

Also, really cool seeing all the "new" buildings before they became sunkissed, dilapidated and run down.

The rumors are true, Supreme will be opening a store in the heart of London. A few pictures have surfaced displaying the store front and it's location. No more ass raping prices from The Hideout (pretty sure they'll no longer carry Supreme now too). James Jebbia finally returns home with this one, we're sure to see even more 1970's UK punk influenced graphics; if that's even possible.

I'm always on a hunt for decent post-rock bands and I wanted to share a gem I found recently. And by recently, I mean just now. These guys aren't quite new, in fact, they've been around since 2008, but supposedly went on hiatus after releasing their album that year. Anyhow, they released an album just two days ago that has the original six tracks from their first album, all remastered. Got a chance to listen to the full album, and I must say, they can be easily compared to Mogwai, and Explosions. So without further ado, you are welcome.
